The adult male hooded merganser in his winter plumage is unmistakable among other northern America waterfowl. The hooded is the smallest of our three native merganser species and this bird is one that will need some special care to raise and breed successfully in captivity. However you like myself may come to believe that his stunning courtship display makes keeping this species wroth the extra trouble.
